Skin Patch Treats Certain Cancers: DNews Nuggets : Discovery News.

Skin Patch Treats Certain Cancers: Skin patches have become common for treating cigarette addiction and for administering medication. Now a small medical trial has shown that patches could be used to painlessly treat skin cancer without surgery or scars. Priyanka Gupta, a student at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhipublished a study about a patch infused with phosphorus-32, a radioactive isotope used to treat some types of cancer. In the study, 10 patients ages 32 to 74 years old with basal cell carcinoma on their faces wore the patch for three hours one day and then for another three hours four and seven days later. Three months later, the doctor performed biopsies on all ten patients and found no traces of tumors. When biopsies were performed again at six months, however, the basal cell carcinomas had returned in two of the patients. Although the skin patch may not eliminate the cancer in all people, it could dethrone nonmelanomas as the most numerous type of cancer. via Singularity Hub
